FAQS

Is health insurance mandatory in the UAE?

The situation is different in different emirates. Broadly, if you are a citizen you get free healthcare (paid for by your taxes), while if you are a resident you are obliged to buy health insurance or your employer is obliged to buy it for you.
Abu Dhabi was the first to bring in mandatory health insurance when the Abu Dhabi Health Insurance Law (Law No 23 of 2005) made basic health insurance cover mandatory from 1 June 2006. A similar law was passed in Dubai on 1st January 2014, with the different levels of insurance being rolled out in phases according to the size of the company between 2014 and 2016. In Shahjah and the other emirates, the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention administers the public healthcare sector, so they are governed by laws passed by the Ministry of Health.
